WINTER/SPRING CLASSES - 2008

Mondays
10:00am–noon
BEGINNING ACTING/IMPROV.
with Josiah Polhemus
Have fun learning basic acting and improvisation skills. Students will work on monologues, theater games and scene work. Final class will be an invited-audience presentation of acting work in class. Josiah is a noted writer/director/producer and award winning stage and screen actor. He has taught theatre at colleges and community organizations.

PLAYWRITING
with Josiah Polhemus

Learn the techniques of writing for the stage: plot, character development, language, structure and staging. Create a new piece or bring one you are working on. Final scenes will be performed in a staged reading with actors. In Los Angeles Josiah has won festival awards for Best Screenplay and Best Film for his two short films: Pause and Vision.  He has had four of his original plays produced.

INTRODUCTION TO
SHAKESPEARE

with Julian Lopez-Morilla
Discuss how to approach reading a Shakespeare play. Learn to explore the poet's language and develop a single Shakespeare monologue for use as an audition or performance piece. Julian Lopez-Morilla is one the Bay Area’s most noted Shakespearean actors, having performed in all the Bard’s plays.

ADVANCED IMPROVISATION WORKSHOP

Join award-winning filmmaker and actor, Josiah Polhemus, for improvisational games and exercises designed to keep your mind active and your body laughing. Learn how to start a scene from nothing, create a character, musical improv and…more!

INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED ACTING
with Josiah Polhemus
Join Josiah in exploring scene work and acting exercises designed to bring characters from the page to the stage.  Acting exercises will include techniques created by: Uta Hagen, Keith Johnstone and Sanford Meisner. Josiah was trained in Acting at the American Conservatory Theater.

THE ART OF STORYTELLING

Storytelling Director & Kate Rowland, voice coach – Storytelling is an art that anyone can enjoy.  Learn and craft stories you’ll love to tell, with a focus on supportive feedback and coaching. This class is recommended for new and seasoned storytellers.

“FIND YOUR VOICE” SINGING CLASS

Scrumbly Koldewyn
For non singers and singers who want to broaden their singing experience. The class features vocal technique, group development and individual attention. Scrumbly is a popular and well known pianist, singer, performer and teacher.

STRETCH YOUR STORYTELLING
with Liz Nichols, Storytelling Director, and guest teachers Ruth Halpern, Erica Lann-Clark & others
 

Take your storytelling skills to the next level in this ongoing class. Challenging exercises are balanced with time for individual telling and supportive feedback and coaching. New students welcome with instructor’s permission.

SCENE STUDY FOR NEVER TOO LATE.
with Dr. Stuart Kandell

Join Stagebridge's founder and artistic director in scene study for our ongoing musical revue, “Never Too Late.Learn songs, dances plusdevelop monologues and audition pieces.  The production tours to senior centers and residences, health fairs, community and special events.


Winter/Spring Semester (22 Weeks) Class Fees (Except where noted)

$110 per class per semester. $130 for two classes on same day.

Scholarships are available.


All classes and workshops are held at the First Congregational Church of Oakland, located at 2501 Harrison Street, Oakland (at the corner of 27th and Harrison Streets). Plenty of free parking, wheelchair accessible, and close to the 19th Street BART station.
