Mondays

BEGINNING ACTING
with Josiah Polhemus
Theatre/Drama Director
Have fun learning basic acting, improvisation, movement skills and text analysis. Students will work on monologues, theater games and scene work. Josiah is a noted writer/director/producer and award winning stage and screen actor. He has taught theatre at colleges and community organizations.

PLAYWRITING
with Josiah Polhemus

“As imagination brings forth the forms of things unknown, the poet’s pen turns them to shapes and gives to airy nothing a local habitation and a name.”-Shakespeare. Learn the techniques of writing your very own play for the stage: characters, dialogue, plot, structure. Students who continue through spring have their work acted and read by actors in a final staged reading presentation.

“EVERYTHING'S GOIN' MY WAY”

with Ellen Robinson and
Bruce Bierman

A musical revue featuring words and music from some of Rodgers and Hammerstein's greatest musicals including: Oklahoma, King and I, South Pacific, Carousel and The Sound of Music. Participants in this 'triple threat' workshop will have the opportunity to hone their singing, dancing and acting technique with a final performance for the public.

For non singers and singers who want to broaden their singing experience. The class features vocal technique, group development and individual attention. Scrumbly is a popular and well known pianist, singer, performer and teacher.

The improv group is looking for new members to join the fun . Commitment requires weekly Tuesday rehearsals and workshops. This is a touring company that performs and leads workshops throughout the Bay Area.

SOLO PERFORMANCE

with David Ford

 

David Ford (writer, director) is one of the foremost directors of new work, particularly solo performance work in the Bay Area and the nation. David has been collaborating on new and unusual theatre for eighteen years. Recent work includes NOT A GENUINE BLACKMAN with Brian Copeland, which performed more than 370 times in San Francisco, LA and New York. Charlie Varons RUSH LIMBAUGH IN NIGHT SCHOOL had its ten year revival to sold out houses. David has worked at theatres all across the nation. He also teaches Creating and Performing Your Own Work at The Marsh and has taught playwriting at Stanford University and San Francisco State. He is a Resident Artist at the Marsh and was a 2005 Sloan Initiative commisionee.

A longer form improv, musical improv and scene work is explored in a supportive, yet challenging environment. WARNING: The energy is high and laughter is contagious.

Explore scene work using acting exercises from Stanislavsky and Uta Hagen. Challenge yourself to making strong and connected acting choices. For those also interested in directing, select students will be asked to direct scene work.

THE ART OF STORYTELLING

Jeanne Haynes
Storytelling is an art that anyone can enjoy.  Learn and craft stories you’ll love to tell, with a focus on supportive feedback and coaching. This class is recommended for beginners; seasoned storytellers also welcome.

Playback Theater
with Roni Alperin
Storytelling, drama therapy and improvisation collide in this creative technique. Playback Theatre transforms personal stories told by audience members into theatre pieces on the spot using movement, ritual, music and spoken improvisation. Roni is director of the New Beginnings Playback Theatre Company at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco.

Take your storytelling skills to the next level in this ongoing class. Challenging exercises and special exercises balanced with time for individual telling and supportive feedback and coaching.

Join Stagebridge's founder and artistic director in scene study for our ongoing musical revue, “Never Too Late.Learn songs, dances plusdevelop monologues and audition pieces.  The production tours to senior centers and residences, health fairs, community and special events.


Spring Quarter 2009 FEE SCHEDULE
Monday, April 6 – Friday, June 19(11 weeks) 

Class size is limited. To guarantee your space please pre-register.  

Daytime Classes
$75/one class ($6.80/class)
$130/two classes ($65/each) ($5.90/class)
$180/three classes ($60/each) ($5.45/class)

Musical Theatre Class
$75 + $40 materials fee (covers cost of music and renting a theatre) = $115

New Enrollment Policy
All classes must have a minimum number of 10 students or they will be canceled or we will negotiate with students to pay slightly more. We must do this in order to keep the classes financially solvent. There is a maximum of 20 students per class.

We are committed to keeping class fees reasonable, particularly for many of you on fixed incomes. We very much want you to be able to participate to the fullest extent. At the same time, we have to start more closely balancing the cost of the class for us with the fees that we charge you. We have to increase our fees slightly to begin covering our costs. In the past, we have spent more money on classes than we take in from fees.

The average cost of our classes to you is: $6/class or $75/quarter

The average cost to us is: $25/class or $350/quarter (based on 17 students)

We are only charging 25% of the cost of the class. If you are so inclined and able to, please make a donation to help cover the actual cost of the class.

 

Scholarships/Work Study
We want to make sure everyone has the opportunity to take classes. Should you need a partial scholarship please see the instructor. We have limited grant funds available to assist students who are in need. We ask that in return you agree to a work study plan that includes to helping out in the office, at events or backstage.

The nationally acclaimed theatre company of older adults based in Oakland, California celebrates its 30th season as the nation's oldest senior theatre company. Since 1978, the company's mission has been to narrow the gap between the generations and to present positive images of older adults through the medium of theatre arts classes, workshops, healthy aging programs and public performances. The actors range in age from 50-90+ years. The non-profit, intergenerational company has performed over 30 original plays for more than 300,000 people in clubs, senior centers, hospitals, schools and theatres. A pioneer in the field of healthy aging, Stagebridge created the award winning Healthy Aging Program called “See Me!” to train medical professionals to see older adults as people. Stagebridge is also the only West Coast representative of the innovative TimeSlips a creative storytelling method that helps people with dementia. Another first is our summer Performing Arts Camp for adults 50+. Winner of the 2009 MetLife MindAlert Award. Stagebridge has been featured on ABC-TV, CNN, National Public Radio, in Modern Maturity, Oakland Magazine, Storytelling Magazine and at national and regional conferences .
