Games Storytellers Play with Olga Loya, 10:00am–12:00pm

Using the senses and listening skills, participants explore a story so it may be more clearly seen and heard. We will explore one story from many different angles. As part of the class we will also explore different storytelling games.

Storytelling with Marijo, 1:00pm–3:00pm

Come explore story-making to create your own myths from family and personal experiences, current events, and traditional folklore. In this workshop you will be encouraged to discover your own unique rhythms by interweaving a variety of elements, such as story, poetry, photographs, journal entries, and music. This workshop is focused on the creation of new tales for storytelling, solo theatre performance, literary works, or as a legacy for your descendants.

Marijo is an actress, storyteller, writer, and arts educator. In the tradition of the African Griot, she has been called a “truth-keeper,” and uses her work to inspire, entertain, and educate to reveal the common bonds between all people.

She received training at the American Conservatory of Theatre, and has toured throughout the U.S. and London, Germany, and Zimbabwe, Africa. She has been a 3-year recipient artist of the California Arts Council, teaching drama and storytelling to wide range of ages – 6 to 103; as well as workshops on creating stories from life experiences and social concerns.

Marijo has written solo theatre works about HIV/AIDS that have been performed at many venues here and abroad. One of her stories has been published in an anthology, “Positive/Negative: Women of Color and HIV/AIDS.”
